Intro to Kalutara

Kalutara which is an area well known for Mangosteens, a fruit introduced from Malaysia to Ceylon, is 43 Km (approx) from Colombo (zone number 01) Fort city centre where the Old Parliament is located. Also known as Kalutota (කළුතොට) is a major city in the Kalutara District, Western Province of Sri Lanka. It is a strategic location and this city holds an unique position for one of the 4 main rivers in Sri Lanka (River Kalu / කළු ගඟ) which flows into the Indian Ocean almost at the center of Kalutara city

Bridge is an iconic landmark in Kalutara

The bridge in Kalutara is an iconic landmark. It was 450ft long and is separated by a ridge in the middle of the river Kalu. Ceylonese records say that it was opened for road traffic in August 1877 along with a single line of rails in the middle. Currently, There are twin bridges for railway and one for the road traffic. This is a perfect place to watch the sunset and on a clear morning, there is a good chance to get a glimpse of Adam's Peak mountain from this location
